The parliament of Sierra Leone has elected Hon. Neneh Lebbie as the Acting Speaker of Parliament.
The decision was made in accordance with Section 88 of Act No.6 of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, which allows for the appointment of an Acting Speaker in the absence of both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker.
Hon. Lebbie’s election was met with unanimous support from her fellow parliamentarians, who expressed confidence in her ability to preside over the Sixth Parliament. Her appointment comes as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are currently engaged in official duties outside of Sierra Leone.
Upon her election, Hon. Lebbie conveyed her gratitude to the Members of Parliament for their trust and support. “I am deeply appreciative of the confidence you have placed in me to serve as the Acting Speaker. It is an honor to contribute to the leadership of this Parliament during this important period,” she said.
This appointment is a notable moment in Sierra Leone’s parliamentary history, as Hon. Lebbie assumes a critical role in the governance of the nation. Her leadership as Acting Speaker is expected to guide the Parliament’s proceedings effectively until the Speaker and Deputy Speaker return to their duties.
The Sixth Parliament continues to navigate a range of legislative challenges, and Hon. Lebbie’s election is seen as proof of the increasing recognition of women’s roles in Sierra Leonean politics.
