Our Electoral System Still Faces Challenges -President Bio States

His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio of the ruling SLPP party has underscored the timely work of the Tripartite Committee by stating that, our electoral system still faces lots of challenges.

He made this statement after receiving the final report from the Tripartite Committee, which was handed over to him at State House by Dr. Samura Kamara and Dr. David Sengeh in the presence of international partners and the various political heads.

His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio continued by stating that elections are over, and it is now time to move the country forward.

”We are now at the critical stage of governance that requires the collective approach of all and sundry,” he emphasized, adding by commending all three players for undertaking priceless efforts in putting the recommendations together. On behalf of the ruling SLPP government, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has committed to implement the final recommendations in the Tripartite report. He continued by stating that, this will enhance electoral integrity and accountability in all future elections. He further stated that his government understands the need to work together with members of the opposition to build our democracy.

“Today marks a significant milestone to strengthen our democracy by ensuring that we reform our electoral system,” President Bio stated, adding that, this is the first time we have embarked on this exercise to reform our electoral processes. He stated that the unprecedented collaboration, by both the ruling SLPP party and the main opposition APC party, is a demonstration of our shared commitment to our electoral system that is resilient and capable of delivering free and fair elections. He also thanked the United Nations Resident Coordinator for his dedication to the process.

On behalf of the main opposition APC party, Dr. Samura Kamara stated that there have been instances of outright abuse and the recommendations in the Tripartite report must be treated seriously. He continued by urging the government to move the country forward in the interest of all Sierra Leoneans. He further stated that the recommendations in the report are for the good of the country in building an electoral system that is transparent, inclusive and accountable to the people of Sierra Leone.
