Gambian Caught with Arms at Lungi International Airport

Police have arrested one Matthew Mendy, a Gambian citizen with arms at the Lungi International Airport, in the Kaffu Bullum, in the Port Loko District, Northern Province of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Forty-one-year-old Matthew Mendy, identified as an Herbalist and Gambian national has been dragged to court before Magistrate Sahr Kekura of Pademba road court No.1 in Freetown with one count charge of Unlawful Possession of Arms contrary to section 22 (1) of the Sierra Leone commission on Arms and ammunition Act, 2023, Act No.24 of 2023.

According to the particulars of offence, on Monday 29th January 2024, at the Freetown International Airport, Lungi in Port Loko, the Northern Province of the Republic of Sierra Leone was found in possession of one locally made 12 Gauge Calibre Single barrel shot gun without lawful authority.

When the charge was read and explained to the accused person, no plea taken. The prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of police Ibrahim S. Mansaray informed the bench that his witness is absent in court and he sought for a short adjournment date.

Meanwhile, Magistrate Kekura refused bail and remanded the accused person in custody at the Male Correctional facility in Freetown and the matter was adjourned to the 18th March 2024.
