By Fatima Sesay

Abubakarr Sesay, a kush dealer, was sentenced to ten (10) years imprisonment by Justice Isata Sellu Tucker of the High Court in Freetown for being found guilty of possession of 60.5 grams of Kush without lawful authority.

Convict Sesay was arraigned before the court on a count charge of unlawful possession of drugs contrary to section 8 (a) of the National Drugs Control Act 2008, Act No.10 of 2008

The indictment states that the convict, on 27th October 2024 in Freetown, was found in possession of 60.5 grams of kush without lawful authority.

The convict, on his first appearance, pleaded guilty to the offense and pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy on him.

Justice Tucker, before delivering her judgement, said the convict at the available opportunity accepted and took responsibility for his actions, adding that he did not waste the court’s time.

Justice Tucker also took into consideration the plea mitigation of the convict, but said the offence for which the defendant was charged: possession of kush, has become alarming and prevalent in our society, destroying lives and endangering public safety.

She said the court and the judiciary as a whole has a duty to send a clear message that such conduct will not be tolerated. She therefore sentenced the convict to ten years imprisonment at the Male Correctional Facility in Freetown.

She ordered that the Kush, which was treated as exhibit, be forfeited to the state and destroyed by the appropriate authorities. She advised the convict to refrain from such conduct after serving his jail term
