Freetown Engulfs in Darkness
The Government of Sierra Leone, through its Ministry of Energy, has confirmed ongoing negotiations with Karpowership to extend the existing electricity supply contract for up to one year. The talks, led by Sector Lead Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, aim to secure continued energy support for Freetown. However, tensions emerged as the Ministry disclosed that it received a formal disconnection notice from Karpowership on May 28, 2025. The notice indicated that the company intends to halt electricity supply to the capital city at midnight on June 12, 2025, citing unpaid dues. In a partial reprieve, Karpowership has committed to maintaining a 6-megawatt (MW) supply specifically for essential services and critical institutions, including hospitals. In response to the looming power reduction, the Ministry has assured the public—especially Freetown residents—that proactive steps are being taken under the directive of President Julius Maada Bio. These measures are designed to cushion the impact of the reduced power supply. The Ministry also emphasized that actions are underway to ensure reliable, affordable, and accessible electricity in line with the President’s broader energy vision. It highlighted ongoing reforms within the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) aimed at enhancing both the technical and commercial operations of the utility. Despite efforts to stabilize the situation, the Ministry acknowledged that some load shedding is inevitable. Nonetheless, it assured the public that such interruptions will be managed effectively to minimize inconvenience. The Ministry concluded by thanking citizens for their patience and cooperation during this transitional period.
