WAEC Examiners Indicted for Corruption

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone has indicted two senior officials of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on multiple corruption charges, including academic malpractice and abuse of office. According to a press release issued today by the ACC, ISSA KAMARA, Chief Examiner of WAEC, and IBRAHIM KAMARA, Assistant Examiner, are facing a combined total of eleven corruption charges. ISSA Kamara has been indicted on six counts, while Ibrahim Kamara faces five. Both individuals are charged with: Abuse of Office, Abuse of Position, Using Office for Advantage, Conspiracy to Commit a Corruption Offence Additionally, ISSA Kamara is charged with one count of Influencing a Public Officer, contrary to Section 30 of the Anti-Corruption Act. The ACC alleges that the two examiners misused their positions to provide undue advantage to a candidate, Foday Fasuluku Mansaray, in the May/June 2024 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The candidate reportedly received illegal help through access to exam materials, which constitutes academic malpractice. In a separate incident from August 2024, ISSA Kamara allegedly removed a specific exam script intended for his nephew and gave it to IBRAHIM KAMARA. The latter is accused of answering some of the questions before returning the script to be marked among others—another violation of exam integrity. The ACC reaffirmed its strong stance against examination malpractice and corruption in Sierra Leone. The Commission pledged continued vigilance and action to uphold integrity in public offices and examination systems.
