Sierra Leone Intensifies Counter-Terrorism Measures

In a significant move to bolster national security, Sierra Leone’s Parliament has passed the National Counter-Terrorism Act of 2025. The new law introduces comprehensive measures to combat terrorism, including the formation of a National Counter-Terrorism Coordination Committee and enhanced oversight on terrorist financing. Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Saptieu Elizabeth Saccoh, led the legislative effort, emphasizing the Act’s role in preventing financial support for terrorist activities. The law imposes harsher penalties, including extended prison sentences and substantial fines, for individuals and organizations found guilty of terrorism-related offenses. During discussions on the bill’s amendments, Hon. Abdul Sulaiman Marray-Conteh, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, highlighted key updates, including refinements to legal definitions, content revisions, and increased punitive measures. Minister Saccoh reiterated that the Act is a crucial step in safeguarding Sierra Leone from global terrorism threats and enhancing national stability. The Counter-Terrorism Act of 2025 aligns Sierra Leone’s security framework with international standards, reflecting the nation’s commitment to addressing evolving security challenges effectively.
