U.S. to Host Inaugural African Maritime Gender Network Conference

The U.S. Embassy in Freetown, in collaboration with U.S. Naval Forces Europe, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), and the Mission of Iceland to Sierra Leone, is hosting the inaugural African Maritime Gender Network (AMGN) Conference.

Themed “Gender Considerations in Maritime Security,” the event will take place on January 14-15, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown.

This groundbreaking conference aims to integrate gender perspectives into maritime security initiatives. Notable speakers include Ambassador Bryan D. Hunt, Head of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Freetown; Ambassador Robert Scott, AFRICOM Deputy Commander for Civil-Military Engagement; and Ásdís Bjarnadóttir, Chargé d’affaires of Iceland to Sierra Leone. Key topics will address gender’s role in combating illegal fishing, enhancing women’s roles in decision-making, and promoting economic empowerment in the maritime sector.

Participants, including senior representatives from several African nations, will share insights and discuss strategies to tackle maritime threats while fostering gender equality. The event highlights the U.S. and its partners’ dedication to advancing security, diplomacy, and development through inclusivity.
