Accountability Under Attack!

Sierra Leone’s governance has reached a tipping point, with its leadership structure crumbling under the weight of political gangsterism and negligence.
For many, these revelations are not new but rather confirmation of long-held suspicions.
Parliament, which should safeguard democracy and accountability, has devolved into a self-protecting syndicate. Recent events, such as the Speaker barring a young citizen from questioning parliamentary operations, highlight how those in power stifle dissent and transparency. These actions reveal a governance system prioritizing self-interest over democratic principles, eroding public trust in our institutions.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) once warned that corruption, marginalization, and a lack of trust in public institutions were root causes of Sierra Leone’s civil war. These issues, instead of being addressed, have resurfaced, creating fertile ground for instability. Corruption and mismanagement have entrenched themselves at all levels of governance, with the executive, legislative, and judiciary displaying incompetence and impunity.
President Julius Maada Bio’s administration exemplifies this negligence. Despite repeated allegations of misconduct within his government, decisive action remains absent. For instance, a deputy minister recently accused the vice president of illicit activities without evidence, yet no disciplinary measures were taken. Such inaction undermines accountability and breeds division.
Moreover, the selective application of justice has become a troubling norm. Political opponents of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) are targeted, while loyalists enjoy immunity. This double standard deepens national divisions and signals to citizens that party loyalty supersedes integrity.
President Bio’s governance has further strained the economy by expanding an already bloated government. The appointment of unqualified officials has placed an undue burden on taxpayers while critical sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure remain underfunded. Inflation is soaring, unemployment is rampant, and economic hardships are mounting for ordinary Sierra Leoneans. Yet, instead of addressing these challenges, the president appears detached, allowing corruption and inefficiency to thrive.
The unchecked culture of impunity extends beyond government officials to influential private citizens aligned with the ruling party. Those who incite violence or make inflammatory statements face little to no consequences, while ordinary citizens daring to speak out are silenced through intimidation or harassment.
Sierra Leone stands at a crossroads. Addressing this crisis requires accountability at all levels of government, starting with President Bio. Immediate steps must include:
- Streamlining Government: Reduce the size of the administration, eliminate redundant positions, and allocate resources to essential services.
- Ensuring Accountability: Hold public officials accountable, investigate corruption allegations, and prosecute offenders regardless of political affiliation.
- Strengthening Democratic Institutions: Empower parliament to function independently, acting as a check on executive power rather than a rubber stamp.
- Promoting Inclusivity: Foster dialogue between the ruling party and opposition groups, ensuring fairness and respect for the rule of law.
- Implementing Economic Reforms: Address inflation, unemployment, and economic mismanagement by investing in infrastructure and supporting local businesses.
Citizens, too, must demand better governance by holding leaders accountable at the ballot box and engaging in civic activism. Change begins with collective action and an unwavering commitment to democracy and justice.
Sierra Leone’s current governance crisis threatens the nation’s stability and progress. However, it also presents an opportunity to confront past failures and chart a new course. Rejecting impunity and demanding ethical, competent leadership is the first step toward building a more just and prosperous society.
The future of Sierra Leone lies in the hands of its people. By rising to the challenge, citizens can break free from the cycles of corruption and mismanagement, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
