Parliament Probes MMTU

Probing into the financial transactions of the Milton Magai Technical University (MMTU), the Parliamentary Account Committee has ordered MMTU to pay the sum of 2.5 million leones into the consolidated fund.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament who also doubles as the chairman of the Parliamentary Account Committee, Honourable S. Solomon Thomas stated that the Principal of the Milton Margai Technical University, Mr. Philip John Kanu ought to know better and should have paid the said money into the consolidated fund. He added that, unfortunately the Auditor General report captured the issue. He cautioned the Principal of MMTU that the money belongs to the state and it is not his money.
In response, the Principal of MMTU, Mr. Philip Kanu stated that they inherited the debt from the previous administration, adding that, the previous administration was not paying been paying tax for their staff. He further stated that, unlike the previous administration his administration has been paying staff for all their staff and they have paid 90% of the PAYE Tax.
The Deputy Speaker has further ordered that all asset of the university should be registered and he warned the Estate Officer and Principal to properly account for whatever is happening in their administration. He further cautioned them not to come to Parliament without proof or else they will be fined by deducting from their salaries.
