Chief Samsumana Condemns Violence:
Urges Dignified Approach to Resolving National Differences
The former Vice President of Sierra Leone Alhaji Chief Samuel Samsumana has addressed the recent unsettling events that have gripped the nation, expressed grave concern over the troubling incidents that transpired on Sunday, November 26, 2023, which saw an attack on the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces’ armory at Wilberforce, Murray Town barracks, and the unauthorized release of inmates at the Freetown Maximum Correctional Center.
Highlighting the gravity of these events, Alhaji Chief Samuel Samsumana emphasized that these actions have cast a shadow over the nation’s reputation on the global stage. Reflecting on the country’s turbulent past, notably the devastating eleven-year civil war that claimed over 45,000 lives and left a trail of destruction and trauma, he underscored the urgency of learning from history and steering the nation towards peace and unity.
“The unwarranted sad event that took place on Sunday 26th November, 2023 by certain citizens of our nation that attacked the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces armory at Wilberforce, Murray Town barracks and the breaking and illegal release of inmates at the Freetown Maximun Correctional Center, have again placed our nation in the ugly eyes of the international community,” the statement read
Drawing inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he echoed the sentiment that morality cannot simply be mandated, but behavior can be regulated. He stressed the importance of national unity, urging citizens to rise above individual interests and strive towards a collective vision of a better Sierra Leone.
Expressing dismay at the events that have exacerbated existing divisions, Alhaji Chief Samuel Samsumana urged the populace to mend these divides and prioritize the nation’s interests above personal affiliations. He reminded citizens of the responsibility to uphold peace, calling for a dignified and disciplined approach to resolving differences without resorting to violence.
“This unfortunate event has deepened the political, ethnic and regional divides that need to be mended. Our patriotism should surpass our individuality holding to the responsibilities of making our nation a better place for us, our children and even the unborn,” the statement read.
Acknowledging the swift response of the security forces in addressing the recent challenges, the former Vice President extended condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the turmoil. He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to advocating for peace, unity, and adherence to the rule of law in Sierra Leone.
“I stand with fellow peace-loving and law-abiding citizens of our nation to advocate the fostering of Peace and Unity throughout our nation. We may have our differences on diverse situations in society but in our strength to resolve lies the reason for our survival and true exsistence”.
