At Engineers’ Biennial Conference… SLPHA Company Secretary Recounts Transformation At Water Quay
The Company Secretary of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), Martin Maada George, Esq., has underscored the critical role of engineering in driving Sierra Leone’s sustainable development and economic transformation.
Speaking at the Biennial Conference of the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE) at Raddison Blu, Mammy Yoko Hotel, on Wednesday 17th June, 2026 under the theme “Engineering the Sierra Leone We Desire: A Sustainable Approach,” Mr. George noted that Sierra Leone’s vast natural resources can only be translated into prosperity through engineering innovation, sustainable management, and technical expertise.
He emphasized the need for climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy solutions, and environmentally responsible development practices to ensure sustainable growth for future generations.
Highlighting the role of the Port of Freetown in national development, the SLPHA Company Secretary revealed that the port is undergoing significant modernization initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency, cargo handling capacity, security systems, and vessel turnaround times. He further disclosed that rehabilitation works on Berths 3, 4, 5, and 6 are currently underway, with the involvement of local engineering and consultancy firms.
Martin Maada George, Esq. reaffirmed SLPHA’s commitment to supporting education and innovation, noting that the Authority will continue to provide internship and training opportunities for engineering students as part of efforts to develop local capacity and promote engineering excellence.
He concluded by reaffirming SLPHA’s support for infrastructure development, maritime modernization, and sustainable economic growth in Sierra Leone.
