As Home Of Jemima Ganda Broken Into in Freetown… Concerns About Safety Of Journalists Rises
Freetown, Sierra Leone – August 23, 2023
The residence of journalist Mariama Jemima Ganda, who works with Africa Young Voices (AYV TV), was forcibly entered late at night on August 22, 2023, in the Goderich area of Freetown, in an incident that has raised concerns about the safety of media professionals in the country.
According to information available, the incident occurred at approximately 12:00 midnight while Ms. Ganda and her family were inside the home. Entry into the property appeared to have been made by force, with visible damage to the door.
Sources indicate that items connected to Ms. Ganda’s professional work were disturbed during the incident, while other valuables within the residence were left untouched. This has led to concerns that the break-in may not have been a random act.
Ms. Ganda is known for her reporting on parliamentary proceedings, public expenditure, and issues relating to government accountability. Her work has been featured on AYV TV, one of Sierra Leone’s most widely viewed media platforms.
The matter was reported to the police at Adonkia Police Station. However, there are indications that the response to the incident was delayed, prompting questions about the effectiveness of the intervention. No suspects have been publicly identified at this time.
The incident has generated concern among media practitioners and observers, particularly in light of the nature of Ms. Ganda’s work. Some have noted that reporting on politically sensitive issues can expose journalists to heightened risks.
In the days following the incident, discussions have emerged within media circles regarding the need for improved safety measures for journalists, including stronger institutional support and more effective responses to reported threats.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
