APC Warns Of Peaceful Protest If…

 By JKM

Political tensions are mounting in Freetown as the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) has issued a strong warning of a peaceful nationwide protest over the controversial appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone.

Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters, the APC’s Secretary General declared that the party would not “lend legitimacy to a broken system,” signaling deep dissatisfaction with the appointment. However, the party also left the door open for dialogue, emphasizing its willingness to engage constructively if discussions are conducted in good faith.

The appointment of Mr. Alpha was formally announced on February 20, 2026, by Office of the President, with His Excellency citing constitutional provisions under Section 32(3) of the 1991 Constitution.

The APC argues that the move risks undermining public confidence in the country’s electoral system, raising concerns about transparency and fairness ahead of future elections. The party’s threat of mass protest signals escalating political unease and growing polarization within the democratic space.

Political observers warn that the situation could further heighten tensions if not handled carefully, urging all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and national stability. They stress that maintaining public trust in institutions like the ECSL remains critical to safeguarding Sierra Leone’s democracy.

As the standoff deepens, the nation watches closely—caught between rising political pressure and the urgent need for consensus.
