SLPHA Successfully Completes Expansion
The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has completed the expansion of Berth 8, enhancing the country’s capacity for bulk cargo operations. This project, in collaboration with Nectar Sierra Leone Bulk Terminal (NSBT) Limited, aims to improve the efficiency and volume of bulk cargo handling, supporting Sierra Leone’s economic growth. NSBT Limited, founded in 2015, transitioned from break bulk operations to a concession agreement in 2018, allowing them to construct a new berth to meet evolving demands. The expansion responds to increasing maritime trade and aligns with government efforts to modernize port facilities. SLPHA, under the leadership of Managing Director General Mr. Yankuba Askia Bio, is focused on enhancing port efficiency and capacity. The newly expanded Berth 8 is a land reclaimed of 1.5 Acres, this can be used for additional storage area for warehouses, open storage and also designed for modern bulk cargo operations. Key specifications include a length of 220 meters, a depth of 12 meters, and a width of 32.40 meters, making it capable of accommodating larger vessels typical in international shipping. The SLPHA civil engineering team played a vital role in the supervision towards this project The expansion is expected to provide several advantages
- Increased Capacity: Berth 8 will handle a greater volume of bulk cargo, improving turnaround times for vessels and enhancing the efficiency of the supply chain, which will benefit both importers and exporters.
- Improved Operational Efficiency: The new berth will incorporate advanced loading and unloading technologies, including automation and real-time tracking, to reduce delays and errors. This will lead to quicker services for shipping lines and potential cost savings for all stakeholders.
- Economic Growth and Job Creation: The expansion is expected to increase cargo capacity and attract more shipping lines, which will boost trade volumes and lead to job creation in logistics and related sectors. This growth is anticipated to benefit local businesses and communities.
- Environmental Sustainability: The project aims to implement green technologies and practices, such as cleaner energy sources and improved waste management, to minimize environmental impacts and align with sustainability goals and regulations.
- Strengthened Competitive Advantage
Overall, the addition of Berth 8 will position the port as a leading hub for bulk cargo handling in the region. By increasing capacity, improving operational efficiencies, and prioritizing safety and sustainability, the port will enhance its competitive advantage. This strategic investment not only supports current market demands but also prepares the port for future growth opportunities in an increasingly globalized economy.
