Is Yumkella’s Fate Unknown

By Morris Horner

A growing sense of unease is sweeping through the political corridors of Sierra Leone, as questions arise over the ambitions and maneuvers of Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella. Recent events have fueled concerns about his political aspirations and influence, particularly regarding the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). Reports indicate that Dr. Yumkella, despite not holding a cabinet position, has been linked to attempts to exert significant control over the energy sector. A recent revelation suggested that President Julius Maada Bio and the Minister of Energy should relinquish control of the ministry to Dr. Yumkella, granting him sweeping powers, including the authority to hire and fire personnel at will. This suggestion has been met with resistance, as Dr. Yumkella does not currently hold a parliamentary seat, a prerequisite for a cabinet position. Dr. Yumkella’s public statements and political maneuvering have raised eyebrows within the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). His increasing alignment with President Bio, referring to him as “my boss,” has been perceived by some as a strategic move rather than an expression of genuine loyalty. Critics argue that this is part of a broader attempt to gain political favor and consolidate influence within key government institutions. Additionally, Dr. Yumkella’s actions appear to be causing unrest within the energy sector. Reports suggest that he is working to position allies within the Ministry of Energy, potentially influencing decision-making at EDSA. Among those rumored to be in his inner circle are Amadu Sheriff and an individual identified as Donald, both of whom are reportedly being prepared for strategic appointments. Meanwhile, sources indicate that Ing. Andrew Keili, Chairman of the EDSA board, is considering resignation due to growing concerns over Dr. Yumkella’s assertive approach. Concerns about Dr. Yumkella’s leadership style were highlighted during a recent meeting at the Brookfields Hotel, where he allegedly dismissed the insights of senior management staff in a confrontational manner. Reports indicate that he gave one official just five minutes to explain the complexities of the energy ministry, an approach critics argue reflects a lack of respect for institutional processes. Beyond internal government tensions, Dr. Yumkella’s influence has extended to social media, where allies have been actively promoting narratives critical of current energy sector leadership. Figures like Nabay are allegedly leading an online campaign aimed at reshaping public perception and increasing pressure on government officials. The implications of these developments go beyond intra-party disagreements. The SLPP, historically founded on unity and progress, now faces a pivotal moment where internal cohesion is being tested. Many within the party question whether Dr. Yumkella’s political ambitions align with the collective interest of the SLPP or whether they serve a personal agenda. His previous affiliation with the National Grand Coalition (NGC) adds another layer of complexity, as some believe he is using the party as a fallback strategy to maintain political relevance. As tensions rise, SLPP members must critically evaluate the implications of these developments. Dr. Yumkella’s repeated assertions of being “more educated, more exposed, and more experienced” than President Bio have been perceived by some as undermining the collective leadership of the party. The SLPP now faces a critical decision: whether to allow Dr. Yumkella’s growing influence to shape its future direction or to reaffirm its commitment to a leadership structure rooted in accountability and collective governance. What remains clear is that the party’s unity and stability must take precedence over individual political ambitions. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the SLPP must ensure that its core values remain intact, prioritizing service to the nation above all else.
