Bone Cancer: Signs & Symptoms

Bone cancer is a rare cancer that starts in the bone. It can affect any bone, but it is commonly seen in long bones of the arms or legs.

These symptoms are more commonly caused by other conditions, but persistent bone symptoms should still be checked.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Bone pain: Deep pain in the bone is the most common symptom. Pain may come and go at first, then become more constant over time.
  • Pain worse at night or during rest: Pain that keeps returning, wakes a person at night, or does not improve with rest needs medical evaluation.
  • Swelling or lump near a bone: A lump, swelling, or fullness may appear near the affected bone or joint.
  • Tenderness: The area may feel sore when touched or pressed.
  • Trouble moving: If the cancer is near a joint, movement may become difficult or painful.
  • Limping: Pain in the leg, hip, or knee area may cause limping or difficulty walking.
  • Weak bone or fracture: The affected bone may become weak and can break after a minor injury.
  • Tiredness or weight loss: Some people may feel unusually tired, weak, or may lose weight without trying.

When to get checked

See a doctor if there is:

  • Bone pain that keeps coming back
  • Pain that is worse at night
  • A lump or swelling near a bone
  • Limping or difficulty moving a limb
  • Fracture after a minor injury
  • Unexplained weight loss or persistent tiredness

Key message

Most bone pain is not cancer. But persistent, worsening, night-time bone pain, swelling, limp, or unexplained fracture should not be ignored.

Early medical evaluation can help find the real cause and start proper treatment.
