By Francis Kamara Esq
Prince of Wales (POW) School in Sierra Leone recently concluded its centenary celebration. The events culminated in a spectacular Thanksgiving procession that generated a stampede of opinions on social media. Its distinguished alumni, including government officials, business leaders, academics, artists, and professionals in different fields, attended the event. The institution has been a gold standard of excellence for a century, producing distinguished alumni who have significantly and meaningfully contributed to the country and beyond. Established in 1925, POW School has a long history of providing top-flight education to students from diverse backgrounds. Rather than producing wooden academics, the School develops well-rounded individuals equipped to take on the challenges of the real world, which is a source of pride and inspiration for the entire community. Over the years, the institution has become a powerhouse that has produced prominent alumni of indomitable brilliance in science, arts, and law who have become leaders in their respective professions. What sets POW School apart from other schools in Sierra Leone is its emphasis on creative thinking and problem-solving. Unlike many schools, which focus primarily on rote memorization and exam preparation, POW School encourages students to think outside the box and explore their creative potential. This approach has led to the development of innovative thinkers and creative geniuses who have made a lasting impact in their respective fields. One of POW School’s greatest strengths is its diversity. Students from different backgrounds, cultures, and socio-economic statuses come together to learn and grow, enhancing the educational experience. This diversity is due to the School’s inclusive ethos, which prepares them to thrive in an increasingly globalized society. Each student’s unique background and experiences contribute to the rich tapestry of learning at POW School for a richer educational experience. POW School’s alumni base is broad and deep. They blaze the trail in their respective disciplines, from business and academia to the arts, politics, and athletics. The School’s strong alumni network provides a lifelong connection to the institution and its values, offering support and opportunities for current students and graduates. As POW School looks to the future, it is poised to continue its legacy of academic excellence and creative innovation. However, the School’s standards have not remained the same. With its centenary celebrations, the hope is that the alumni of this great School will work together to maintain the high standards of attracting the best and brightest, inspiring them to carry the torch or brilliance and restore it to the top. The centenary celebrations of POWs are a fitting paean to the institution’s rich history and achievements. The event demonstrates the School’s commitment to academic excellence, creative thinking, and innovation. As the institution begins another century, it is clear that POW School will continue to be a beacon of educational excellence for cultivating creative geniuses in Sierra Leone.
