APC in Leadership Dilemma

The main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party is facing a critical challenge in selecting a successor to Dr. Samura Kamara, its presidential candidate in the 2018 and 2023 elections.

Sources within the party reveal that internal discussions are ongoing but fraught with division, as multiple aspirants are expected to compete for the leadership ahead of the 2028 presidential election. The lack of consensus is compounded by lingering tensions over the credibility of the 2023 elections, which many within the APC claim were marred by irregularities.

Dr. Kamara, a prominent figure in Sierra Leonean politics, has reiterated that his current focus is not on leading the APC in future elections but on addressing alleged electoral malpractices and advocating for democratic reforms. His persistent calls for accountability and transparency have bolstered his standing within the party and among the broader public.

Despite this, the APC has yet to outline a clear roadmap for leadership succession, leaving the party in a state of flux. The ongoing disputes over the 2023 election results continue to influence the party’s internal dynamics, delaying critical decisions about its future direction.

As the APC navigates these challenges, it remains to be seen whether the party can unite behind a new leader or if internal disagreements will hinder its ability to mount a strong campaign in 2028. The outcome of these debates will likely shape not only the APC’s future but also the broader political landscape of Sierra Leone.
